Summary Of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” begins with Harry enduring a difficult summer with the Dursleys, his only remaining family. During a dinner party hosted by Harry’s uncle and aunt, Dobby, a house-elf, visits Harry. Dobby warns Harry not to return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he had spent the previous year. Harry politely ignores the warning, but Dobby causes chaos in the kitchen, angering the Dursleys. As punishment, the Dursleys lock Harry in his room for the rest of the summer. Fortunately, Harry’s friend Ron Weasley rescues him in a flying car, and Harry happily spends the remainder of the summer at the Weasley family home.

While shopping for school supplies with the Weasleys, Harry has two unfortunate encounters. First, he meets his teacher, Lockhart, who insists on having a photo taken with Harry. Harry then encounters Lucius Malfoy, the father of one of his enemies, who nearly starts a fight with Mr. Weasley. As Harry prepares to return to Hogwarts, he and Ron are unable to access the magical train platform, so they fly to Hogwarts in the Weasley’s car. They land haphazardly and both receive punishment. Lockhart scolds Harry, believing he flew the car for attention.

Quidditch practices begin, and Draco Malfoy becomes the new Slytherin Seeker. On the field, Malfoy calls Hermione a “Mudblood,” insulting her Muggle heritage. After Malfoy’s taunts, on Halloween night, someone petrifies the caretaker’s cat and writes a threatening message. Before the attack, Harry hears an eerie voice twice. He first hears it during his detention and again at a party just before the cat is attacked. The entire school is on edge. Harry, Ron, and Hermione investigate and learn that a chamber was opened fifty years ago at Hogwarts, resulting in a student’s death.

While playing for Gryffindor, Harry wins a Quidditch match against Slytherin but is hit by a cursed Bludger, losing the bones in his arm. It turns out that a house-elf cursed the Bludger to get Harry injured and sent home. That night, Harry brings the petrified body of a first-year student to the hospital wing. Shortly after, Lockhart starts a dueling club. During the first meeting, Harry speaks Parseltongue, the snake language, frightening the other students. This ability makes others suspect Harry could be the Heir of Slytherin, the one responsible for opening the Chamber.

Long Synopsis Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Summary

Determined to find the culprit, Harry, Ron, and Hermione brew Polyjuice Potion, allowing them to assume the forms of Slytherin students and question Malfoy about the Chamber. They discover that Malfoy is not the Heir. After a period without attacks, just before Valentine’s Day, Harry finds a diary in a broken toilet. The diary belonged to a ghost named Moaning Myrtle, who reveals secrets about her past. Through the diary, Harry meets Tom Riddle, who had accused Hagrid of opening the Chamber years ago.

Hermione and a Ravenclaw girl are mysteriously petrified. Harry and Ron seek Hagrid’s help but before they can reach him, Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge and Lucius Malfoy remove Dumbledore and Hagrid from Hogwarts. As Hagrid is taken away, he tells the boys to follow the spiders for clues about the monster. A few nights later, Harry and Ron discover that the Chamber’s monster is not a spider, as previously thought, but a creature that left a girl’s body in a bathroom, proving Hagrid’s innocence. They realize Moaning Myrtle is the girl who was killed.

A few days later, they find a piece of paper in Hermione’s frozen hand describing a basilisk. They deduce that the Chamber’s monster is a basilisk. Before they can act on their knowledge, the teachers announce that Ginny Weasley has been taken into the Chamber. Ron, Harry, and Lockhart enter the hidden tunnels behind Myrtle’s bathroom. Lockhart accidentally curses himself, leaving Ron to help him while Harry proceeds alone.

In the Chamber, Harry finds Ginny’s lifeless body and encounters Tom Riddle, who reveals himself as a young version of Voldemort. Harry calls for help from Dumbledore, and Fawkes, a phoenix, and a magical hat appear. Tom summons a basilisk, but Fawkes blinds it. The hat produces a sword, which Harry uses to kill the giant snake. Harry destroys the diary with a basilisk fang, defeating Tom. Ginny awakens.

Harry recounts the adventure to Dumbledore. Lucius Malfoy, accompanied by Dobby, enters the office, and Harry frees Dobby by tricking Lucius into giving him a sock. As students leave for summer vacation, everything ends peacefully for now.
